Naval District Washington stretches for over 4,000 square miles in the District of Columbia and acts as the common support to naval installations within a 100-mile radius of the Pentagon. Services provided include public works, public safety, community support, human resources and morale, welfare, and recreation. Naval District Washington is known as the “Quarterdeck of the Navy”. The commandant of the Naval District Washington coordinates official ceremonies through the Naval District Washington and serves as deputy commanding officer for the Joint Forces Headquarters—National Capital Region. School districts information is handled by the Fleet & Family Support Center which will determine where each student will attend school based on their place of residence. Specialized programs and academics are offered by the District public schools and application for the schools can be made directly. There are also a number of private schools available in the Washington D.C. area that provides kindergarten, preschool and nursery school options for parents with young children. Adult education is also an option as well as local technology centers.
Military personnel just arriving in the Washington D.C. area should use their Housing Referral Representative to advise them on both on-post and off-post housing. There are several housing units located in nearby neighborhoods including Woodbridge Run, Summerfield, and Bellevue. The normal waiting list is 3-6 months. Although a waiting list may be in effect, housing may be available at other military properties in the area. For current housing allowances, call the Navy’s Housing Referral Office at 1-800-210-0139. The Navy Housing Welcome Center is located in Building 414 and can be contacted at 202-433-0346. Temporary lodging is offered through the Navy Lodge in Bellevue Housing and can be contacted at 1-800-NAVY-INN. Reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance and up to 10 days of Temporary Living Expenses may be approved.
